Transoceanic Charters Antonov 124 for Buzzard Field Development Project

Transoceanic/UK recently handled a highly time-sensitive project to collect, repack, and airlift a 27-ton VSD Static Converter - plus accessories - from ASI Robicon in Pennsylvania, USA, to the Dragados Shipyard in Cadiz, Spain. The piece and its additional components were essential for the final commissioning of the 10,000 te Buzzard Production Deck.

Meticulous planning was the key to the success of this move. Special scheduling permits were needed to transport the oversize cargo over roads, while around-the-clock pacing was necessary to meet the arrival of the Aircraft at Pittsburgh International Airport. Meteorological sources were also closely monitored as a series of severe snowstorms barreled down the Northeast coast of the United States.

Once at Pittsburgh airport, the cargo was lifted from the special ‘low-bed trailer’ directly onto the Antonov 124 cargo plane using the aircraft’s special on-board crane system, located in the rear of the aircraft. With a tight weather window closing in, the cargo was loaded and secured, and departure effected roughly one hour before the snowstorms reached Pittsburgh. These same storms subsequently closed many airports in the US, and caused widespread disruption of transportation services.

The following morning the aircraft touched down safely in Seville, Spain where Transoceanic personnel managed the offloading and transportation to the final destination. Pre-clearance with customs was arranged and road permits were in place, as three [3] special low-bed trailers stood in position to receive the cargo.

The final 114 km journey from Seville Airport to Dragados Shipyard in Cadiz was then underway. By mid-afternoon, all cargo had been offloaded and positioned next to the huge Buzzard production deck. All cargo arrived safely, without incident and ahead of a demanding schedule to the satisfaction of our client, Nexen petroleum UK Ltd.
