Transoceanic Moves Two 68-Ton Distillation Units to Jurong Island, Singapore

Transoceanic/Houston recently handled the complicated transportation of a massive distillation tower, measuring 427 cms high x 457cms wide x 4,572 cms long, which was trucked from Wisconsin to Houston .

Upon arrival Transoceanic managed the loading of the unit at The Port of Houston utilizing a specialized project vessel. It was then lashed and secured on deck for the ocean transportation to Singapore.

Upon arrival at Pasir Panjang Port, the cargo had to be loaded aboard a barge, which would carry the units to Jurong Island. The barge option was necessary due to the cargo’s tremendous weight and dimensions.

With this came a host of logistical problems including, suitable tide, a suitable water-front discharge point [with a location close to the shore – and without land obstacles], suitable equipment availability for the discharging operation, and ground density at the waterfront sufficient to handle the weight of the shore crane. In addition, the ground had to be stabilized for the inland transfer and the tie-up with the construction firm (appointed by the client) for offloading at the foundation point.

The problem was that the barge was farther from the shore than expected - even at the best tide. Also the soft ground on the waterfront necessitated the hiring of an engineer to test ground stability and calculate out-reach, which soon required 2 x 500 ton cranes just to lift the 68-ton base over a 30-meter outreach. As for the ground, it was recommended that it be compacted with a layer of 1.5 inch steel plate from the discharge point to the main entrance of the site.

Given the length of the distillation column combined with its weight, it was a challenge having the cargo sitting on a trailer configured to used the unit’s weight as the "push factor" in moving it safely to the exit point.

In spite of the obstacles, the overall shore work took less than 3 hours to complete, and the cargo was safely on its way to the final destination.
